Building content organizations that last

My 12 years at Lonely Planet span five distinct roles and three major organizational transformations: print-first to digital-first, domestic to international focus, and website to mobile app product development. I now lead a 20-person content organization supporting on-time delivery across 230+ guidebooks and illustrated travel books annually.

I coached a team of five senior editors into manager roles. I lead content systems and operations: shaping Contentful architecture, designing the POI-based architecture and app content model that structure 200k+ POIs within 730k+ Contentful entities, and moving the organization from external-consultant dependency toward internal CMS ownership. I also own the rollout of editorial AI governance, including Lonely Planet's published editorial AI policy.

I use automation as a supporting capability, including commissioning workflows that return 170+ instrumented hours annually and reduce contract processing from days to minutes. The tool matters less than the operating model around it: something teams can adopt, govern, and improve.

I'm also a company spokesperson, representing Lonely Planet on TV and radio, most recently in a 2026 Fox 10 Phoenix segment on budget travel.

AI & content

I approach AI as an operating-model question: where can it create leverage, how do teams adopt it responsibly, and where must editorial judgment remain decisive?

  • Own the rollout of editorial AI governance: Lonely Planet's public editorial AI policy, contributor guidance, and QA guardrails such as sampling AI summaries before publication and labeling them clearly
  • Led the strategic response as AI reshaped search, investing in differentiated local expertise and keeping the team effective through the traffic decline
  • Prototyped an AI-assisted CMS workflow in which the agent proposes changes with evidence and sources, and an editor approves each one before anything touches the CMS
  • Built a multi-agent weekly travel-intelligence report that combines internal demand signals with external trade reporting to give destination editors ranked content ideas

My perspective: the organizations that come out ahead will make their expertise structured, governable, and useful across systems, and will be clear about where human knowledge still decides.

Beyond work

Based in Nashville, Tennessee, I'm a father of two and partner to Danielle. When I'm not building content systems, you'll find me:

  • Running with the East Nasties running club and training for half marathons
  • Photography including street and travel photography
  • Home automation tinkering with Unraid servers and Docker
